For those who don’t know, Evernote is a tool that essentially captures all your thoughts and ideas into one place so you can come back and organize it all later. It’s a really flexible tool that can be adapted for many purposes and I highly recommend it to anyone who has lots of stuff to manage in a day.

I’ve been using Evernote for less than a year and while I really like it for its syncing and the ability to capture everything that comes through my head I had a few annoying points to pick with it.

  • The blurry font
  • Dead-slow startup speed
  • Chunky interface
  • Syncing would mess up my font styles

Enter Evernote 4.0, where all of the above and more has been fixed. The new interface is absolutely wonderful and the startup speed is flat out amazing.

According to the Evernote team they rewrote the entire client application in C++ for Windows because it’d take too long to fix all the problems they had with Evernote 3.5.

I do have to say that the team really streamlined the interface by minimizing the amount of clutter shown at any given time and merging the toolbar with the file menu was a great move.

Another wonderful highlight of Evernote 4.0 is how it hides elements you don’t always need. For example Note Info is now hidden by default and can be brought up by clicking on the chevron or pressing F8.

For Windows 7 users Evernote 4.0 now brings an incredibly handy Jump List for quick access to important functions with a single right-click:

Overall I’d highly recommend Evernote 4.0 to anyone who wants an quick and effective way of capturing all their thoughts into one place and for those who don’t it’s definitely worth trying out.
